Health scoring
A health score you can actually explain.
Most apps hand you a number with no reasoning. Barliva's 0–100 food health score is built from a category-aware baseline, transparent penalties and capped bonuses — and always shows its work.
1 · Category baseline
Every product starts from a baseline appropriate to its category, so water and candy aren't judged on the same curve.
2 · Penalties
Concerning nutrients, additives and high processing apply transparent, bounded penalties.
3 · Capped bonuses
Positive attributes add points — but bonuses are capped so nothing games the score.
Transparent by design
Every score shows its factors.
Barliva surfaces exactly what raised and lowered a score — the nutrients, the additives, the processing level. No black box, no mystery letter grade.
- Nutrition signals (sugar, salt, saturated fat, fibre, protein)
- Additives of concern, with context
- Processing level via NOVA
- Nutri-Score and Green-Score as inputs, not the verdict

FAQ
Health score questions.
What is a good food health score?
Barliva scores from 0 to 100; higher is better. Scores are category-aware, so each product is judged against an appropriate baseline rather than one universal scale.
Is it the same as Nutri-Score?
No. Nutri-Score and NOVA are inputs Barliva considers, but the Barliva score also factors additives, processing and category baselines — and it's fully explainable.
Can manufacturers see why a product scored a certain way?
Yes. The factor breakdown is available to manufacturers and via the API, so you can see and benchmark exactly what drives a score.
